Later in my life, when finally I had earned a little money, I suggested to my wife that we buy a summer cottage in the Napa Valley, hopefully with a few grapevines, and the agent showing us these modest possibilities said, “This isn’t for you, but the Niebaum estate is being auctioned and that was once part of the great Inglenook, the most beautiful wine estate in the world, and this would be a chance to see it.” So we said “sure” and went to see it, but to behold it was to wish it could be yours, and eventually that wish, after the success of The Godfather came true. Those childhood stories made winemaking sound like so much fun. We loved hearing those stories sitting around the table where we kids were allowed a little wine mixed with 7 Up.ĭid you get serious about wine at some point in his life? Imagine a single orange divided up between seven boys! There were elaborate schemes of lowering the youngest in a basket on a rope into the cellar where the grapes were kept, and as the old man approached letting go, with the littlest brother crashing into them. But I also heard great stories my uncles told me about the days during Prohibition, when the government allowed families accustomed to drinking wine with food, to make two barrels of wine in their homes. My grandfather had seven sons and expected them to help out in making this home wine, but the boys were more anxious to steal the grapes, because fresh fruit was a luxury and they were quite poor. I also don't understand why people dislike blends, I find them more complex as there is a group of individuals testing aromas and flavors in order to create the "best selling" whiskey.Did your family drink wine when you were a child?Īs an Italian-American, I confess I never saw a dinner table that didn’t have wine on it. Get yourself a "Whiskey glass" and drink it neat, if you don't appreciate it neat but you want to, start with a cheaper whisky like a green label or the double black and build your way up top to become a self-thought connoisseur. Just make sure you enjoy it as well and do not dare to mix it with coke or ice. It is a good whiskey to have it at home, to make you feel special, to make you feel like you have your sh** together, not gonna lie, it had a nice psychological effect just by owning it. Blue label is one of the most smooth whiskeys I've ever drank before, but if you are looking for a cheaper option and yet with good quality I'd recommend the Green Label.ĭon't get me wrong, the Blue Label is great and with a nice smell but I wouldn't pay the retail price of 144£(current on Whiskey Exchange), I just bought it on Black Friday (with a nice discount on top of it). I'm not a Whisky connoisseur but I own a different range of whiskeys from blends, single malts. Ice was more enjoyable and aftertaste was better.Ĭocktail is probably very nice if you're willing to mix something with this value.Ī generous 4/5 as saying a high 3/5 doesn't feel quite right. Neat was quite nice but not as smooth as my preference. Yeah, would be a nice gift as presentation is lovely but unless the gifted person really knows their whisky, stick to Green Label or Gold Reserve. I'm happy to have this in my collection and will drink it slow but personally I feel that Green Label is better. It doesn't really have the sense of rarity with how readily available it is, however, this is still a very nice whisky and worth trying. I would say the whisky is more of a £60-80 value in terms of flavour and notes.
